Lead paint safety

November 6th, 2007

Lead-based paint is a major source of lead poisoning for children and can also affect adults. In children, lead poisoning can cause irreversible brain damage and can impair mental functioning. It can retard mental and physical development and reduce attention span. It can also retard fetal development, even at extremely low levels of lead. In adults, it can cause irritability, poor muscle coordination, and nerve damage to the sense organs and nerves controlling the body. Lead poisoning may also cause problems with reproduction (such as a decreased sperm count). It may also increase blood pressure. Thus, young children, fetuses, infants, and adults with high blood pressure are the most vulnerable to the effects of lead.

Things to Do with Your Roommate

October 24th, 2007

…Besides Get on Each Other’s Nerves

Living with someone is not easy. Give these tips a try before you break out the duct tape and divide your place in half.

* Go shopping.
You have a car, and your roommate doesn’t. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Double-up and head to the store for some groceries, or hit the local Wal-Mart.

* Go exploring.
Pick an area of the city and go exploring outside campus. Yes, there is a world outside of your campus bubble. Pick up a city weekly paper, step off campus and play tourist.

* Go to church or some other event.
Do you and your roommate share an interest in religion? Is there a volunteer opportunity around the corner? Taking a chance to spend time with your roommate in a non-school, stress-free situation is a great change of pace. And it makes you feel good.

* Decorate your dorm.
Does your place need a makeover? If you work together to redo your room, you’ll have a better chance of coming up with something you both can stand.

* Cook dinner together.
Even if you’re a lousy chef, the best part of making food with someone is the whole process. Then again, the eating part is pretty good, too.

* Try a local restaurant.
So, cooking dinner didn’t go so well? Let someone else do the work. You’ll save time and eliminate the need to do dishes afterwards.

* Organize a group activity.
Does your floor need a movie night? Is the hall looking a little boring? Join forces with your roommate, organize a group of people and take charge. Sometimes, focusing on an outside goal can bring the two of you even closer.

* Take pictures.
Bust out the camera and start taking random pictures. When you’re done, print them out or put them online. A lot of graduates say that they wish they would’ve taken more pictures in college; do this, and you’ll be one step ahead.

Win-Win

October 24th, 2007

Mom and Dad:

• Stop worrying. We’re all grown up, and you’ve done a good job helping us get this far. We might go to a raucous frat party or two, but let us make our own mistakes.

• We miss our doggies and kitties. Send us photos to cheer us up.

• We love care packages — the more personalized, the better. Send stuff we can make with hot water, like Easy Mac and Ramen soup. Anything snackish or sweet (like your homemade cookies) goes over big with our new friends. We also appreciate restaurant/grocery store gift certificates and toiletries.

• Check out this brilliant idea read on a university Web site: If you miss the social connections with other high school parents, corral a group of them together and have care package parties throughout the year. Sounds like a win-win arrangement to me.

Answering & Viewing Apartments…

October 22nd, 2007

All the research and prep work is finished! Now you’re ready to begin responding to apartment listings, checking out referrals, contacting property managers and viewing prospective apartment units.

When viewing a unit, make sure to check that it’s in functional order and what the surrounding neighborhood is like.

Also, make sure you bring all necessary materials when viewing available units, such a notepad or digital camera.

In large competitive markets, the best apartments can be snatched up in one day. If you live in such an area, be prepared to submit your application or sign the lease the same day. In these cases, it’s a good idea to bring:

  • your checkbook
  • two recent bank statements
  • last year’s tax return (first page and the signature page)
  • two recent pay stubs
  • letter of employment
  • letter of reference from a previous landlord or their contact information
  • tape measurer
  • camera and notebook

Once you’ve found the perfect apartment, you’re ready to begin the process of signing the lease. Read up on how to sign the lease to avoid any errors or regrets.
